Manually Graded Assessments: Types and How They Work
Manually graded assessments allow you to evaluate student submissions. These assessments are not automatically graded.
Unlike multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions, these require you to review each answer, approve or reject it, and even provide feedback to the student.
On the platform, there are four types of manually graded assessments you can create: Text Answer, Image Answer, Short Text, and File Answer.
To get started, log in to your website, click Products => Edit => Add Lesson => choose the Assessment option => fill in the necessary information => Edit Question => Add New Question => and scroll down to Open-ended Questions.
Types of Manually Graded Assessments
- Text Answer: Students type a longer written response like an essay, so the answer box comes with a rich-text editor.
- Image Answer: Here, students upload an image (JPG or PNG) as their response. They can support their image with a text description, and the maximum upload size that can be made is 10 MB.
- Short Text: Students provide a brief written response, usually one or two sentences.
- File Answer: Students upload a file (such as a PDF, Image, Word document, or spreadsheet) as their answer. They can also add a text description if they want to, and the maximum upload size that can be made is 10 MB.
Assessment Settings
After creating your questions, go back to your lesson page to tweak your assessment settings. These settings are enabled by default, so you need to review them according to your assessments.
- Allow assessment retries: This determines the number of times an assessment can be attempted by every student. If the attempts are used up, the assessment will be locked.
- Allow question retries: This determines the number of times a question can be reviewed and its answer can be changed.
- Allow skipping questions: This allows students to skip questions, but skipped questions will be marked wrong.
- Allow review of previous answers: This allows the student to go back and review their answers to a question.
Note that they can only go back to check the answer if this is turned on; they will not be able to change it. To enable them to change their answer, the allow question retries button must be enabled.
- Show results after each answer: This shows the students the correct answer and, if they are right, after each question is answered.
- Submit assessment for manual review: When this is enabled, the assessment will not be automatically graded. Instead, you will have to do it yourself, under the Review Assessment screen in your Admin dashboard.
Note: For open-ended/manually graded assessments, whether you enable this button or not, the assessments will not be automatically graded.
- Maximum passing grade: This is 40% by default, but you can always update it. A student can only pass an assessment when they score above the passing grade.
After setting this up, you can then scroll down the page to save your settings and publish your lesson.
