How to set up an Ordering Assessment

What is an Ordering Assessment?

An Ordering Assessment is a question type where learners must arrange items in the correct order or sequence. The system gives students a shuffled list of options, and they need to drag or rearrange them to reflect the right sequence.

Think of it like organizing puzzle pieces into the correct storyline, except here, it’s applied to learning content.

This format helps learners demonstrate logical reasoning and process understanding. This type of assessment goes beyond memorization and focuses on how well learners grasp relationships and order.

How to set up an Ordering Assessment

  1. Go to Products => Edit.
  2. Click Add Lesson and choose Assessment Lesson.
  3. Enter your Assessment Title (mandatory). Add a description if you’d like.

Tip: AI Assistant can help you create strong, descriptive titles.

  1. Click Edit Questions => Add New Questions.
  2. Select Ordering from the question types.
    • Write your question or instructions (e.g., Arrange the steps of photosynthesis in the correct order).
    • Add items in their correct order the system will shuffle them for students.
    • Use the Add Option button to add more sequence items.
  3. Click Save Questions.
  4. Use the Preview button to see how students will interact with the sequence.

Students will see a list of items in a jumbled order. Their task is to drag and rearrange them until they form the correct sequence.

This approach keeps learning dynamic and engaging, and ensures students really grasp “how” and “when” things happen.

Note: You can also let the AI Assistant suggest steps or sequence items for you.

Assessment Settings

After creating your questions, go back to your lesson page to tweak your assessment settings. These settings are enabled by default, so you need to review them according to your assessments.

  • Allow assessment retries: This determines the number of times an assessment can be attempted by every student. If the attempts are used up, the assessment will be locked.
  • Allow question retries: This determines the number of times a question can be reviewed and its answer can be changed.
  • Allow skipping questions: This allows students to skip questions, but skipped questions will be marked wrong.

  • Allow review of previous answers: This allows the student to go back and review their answers to a question.

Note that they can only go back to check the answer if this is turned on; they will not be able to change it. To enable them to change their answer, the allow question retries button must be enabled.

  • Show results after each answer: This shows the students the correct answer and, if they are right, after each question is answered.
  • Submit assessment for manual review: When this is enabled, the assessment will not be automatically graded. Instead, you will have to do it yourself, under the Review Assessment screen in your Admin dashboard.
  • Maximum passing grade: This is 40% by default, but you can always update it. A student can only pass an assessment when they score above the passing grade.

After setting this up, you can then scroll down the page to save your settings and publish your lesson.
