How to set up a Match Assessment
What is a Match Assessment?
A Match Assessment is a question type where learners must correctly pair items from two different lists. Typically, one list contains “questions” (or prompts) and the other list contains “answers” (or options). The student’s task is to connect each item in the first list with its correct counterpart in the second.
This is like a memory game where you flip cards and connect related pairs, except here, it’s used for structured learning.
This type of assessment is highly interactive and helps students actively recall connections rather than just recognizing a single correct answer. They’re also a fun alternative to multiple-choice because they require more active engagement.
How to Set Up a Match Assessment
- Go to Products => Edit.
- Click Add Lesson and select the Assessment Lesson.
- Enter your Assessment Title (mandatory). Add an optional description if needed.
Tip: You can also use the AI Assistant to suggest titles or even question ideas.
- Click Edit Questions => Add New Questions.
- Choose Match from the list of question types.
- Write your question or instructions (e.g., Match the capitals to their countries).
- Add items for the left side (prompts) and their correct matches for the right side (answers).
- Use the Add Option button to add more pairs.
- Click Save Questions.
- Use the Preview button to check how the assessment will look and feel for students.
In the course player, students will see two columns: one with the items to match and another with the possible answers. They’ll drag or connect the correct pairs.
This creates a very hands-on learning experience where students actively engage instead of passively selecting from a list.
Note: The AI Assistant can also help suggest both prompts and matching options.
Assessment Settings
After creating your questions, go back to your lesson page to tweak your assessment settings. These settings are enabled by default, so you need to review them according to your assessments.
- Allow assessment retries: This determines the number of times an assessment can be attempted by every student. If the attempts are used up, the assessment will be locked.
- Allow question retries: This determines the number of times a question can be reviewed and its answer can be changed.
- Allow skipping questions: This allows students to skip questions, but skipped questions will be marked wrong.
- Allow review of previous answers: This allows the student to go back and review their answers to a question.
Note that they can only go back to check the answer if this is turned on; they will not be able to change it. To enable them to change their answer, the allow question retries button must be enabled.
- Show results after each answer: This shows the students the correct answer and, if they are right, after each question is answered.
- Submit assessment for manual review: When this is enabled, the assessment will not be automatically graded. Instead, you will have to do it yourself, under the Review Assessment screen in your Admin dashboard.
- Maximum passing grade: This is 40% by default, but you can always update it. A student can only pass an assessment when they score above the passing grade.
After setting this up, you can then scroll down the page to save your settings and publish your lesson.
