How to set up a Drop-down Assessment
What is a Drop-down Assessment?
A Drop-down Assessment is a question type where learners select the correct answer from a list of options hidden inside a drop-down menu. Instead of displaying all the options at once, students click a small arrow to reveal the options and possible answers.
Think of it like filling out an online form where you choose your country or date of birth from a drop-down list, except here, the drop-down is used for learning and testing knowledge.
They’re great for quizzes where the answer is short and straightforward, such as a single word, number, or short phrase.
How to set up a Drop-down Assessment
- Go to Products => Edit.
- Click Add Lesson and select the Assessment Lesson.
- Enter your Assessment Title (mandatory). You can also add a description if you’d like (optional).
Tip: Use the AI Assistant to help generate a catchy title.
- Click Edit Questions => Add New Questions => Choose Drop-down from the list of 7 available question types.
- Write your question and provide several answer options.
- Use the Add Option button to add extra choices.
- Identify the correct answer by ticking the box in front of your option.
- Click Save Questions to save your setup.
- Use the Preview button to see exactly how students will experience the question.
In the course player, students will see a question with a small drop-down flag. Clicking it reveals the answer options.
This keeps the interface simple and focused, while still letting learners engage with the material.
Note: You can also use the AI Assistant to suggest both the question and its possible answer options.
Assessment Settings
After creating your questions, go back to your lesson page to tweak your assessment settings. These settings are enabled by default, so you need to review them according to your assessments.
- Allow assessment retries: This determines the number of times an assessment can be attempted by every student. If the attempts are used up, the assessment will be locked.
- Allow question retries: This determines the number of times a question can be reviewed and its answer can be changed.
- Allow skipping questions: This allows students to skip questions, but skipped questions will be marked wrong.
- Allow review of previous answers: This allows the student to go back and review their answers to a question.
Note that they can only go back to check the answer if this is turned on; they will not be able to change it. To enable them to change their answer, the allow question retries button must be enabled.
- Show results after each answer: This shows the students the correct answer and, if they are right, after each question is answered.
- Submit assessment for manual review: When this is enabled, the assessment will not be automatically graded. Instead, you will have to do it yourself, under the Review Assessment screen in your Admin dashboard.
- Maximum passing grade: This is 40% by default, but you can always update it. A student can only pass an assessment when they score above the passing grade.
After setting this up, you can then scroll down the page to save your settings and publish your lesson.
