How to create a Fill in the Blanks Assessment

Fill-in-the-blank assessments are designed to test your students’ ability to recall key concepts and apply their knowledge in context.

Instead of choosing from multiple options, students type in the missing word or phrase to complete a sentence or statement.

This makes the assessment more engaging and ensures a deeper level of understanding.

Creating the Assessment

To create a fill-in-the-blanks assessment, log in to your website => click Products => Edit => Add Lesson => and select the Assessment option.

Enter your Lesson Title and Description, or have the AI assist you with that. Then, click Edit Questions.

On the next page, choose between adding questions from your question bank (if you have fill-in-the-blanks there) or clicking Add New Questions and selecting Fill in the blanks from the options.

  • Under Questions, type in your question and type in [] ([ ])to signify the blank fields you want your students to fill.
  • You can pick a related lecture, but this is optional.

  • For Answers, you can create as many options as you want. Under each answer or blank field, input the correct answers to your question.
  • You can also add hints to these answers, though this is optional.

Afterward, preview the question and click Save Question.

Assessment Settings

After creating your questions, go back to your lesson page to tweak your assessment settings. These settings are enabled by default, so you need to review them according to your assessments.

  • Allow assessment retries: This determines the number of times an assessment can be attempted by every student. If the attempts are used up, the assessment will be locked.
  • Allow question retries: This determines the number of times a question can be reviewed and its answer can be changed.
  • Allow skipping questions: This allows students to skip questions, but skipped questions will be marked wrong.

  • Allow review of previous answers: This allows the student to go back and review their answers to a question.

Note that they can only go back to check the answer if this is turned on; they will not be able to change it. To enable them to change their answer, the allow question retries button must be enabled.

  • Show results after each answer: This shows the students the correct answer and, if they are right, after each question is answered.
  • Submit assessment for manual review: When this is enabled, the assessment will not be automatically graded. Instead, you will have to do it yourself, under the Review Assessment screen in your Admin dashboard.
  • Maximum passing grade: This is 40% by default, but you can always update it. A student can only pass an assessment when they score above the passing grade.

After setting this up, you can then scroll down the page to save your settings and publish your lesson.
